2024 Stein "1900 Alfer Hölle" Riesling, Mosel, Germany
ABOUT THIS WINE
The â1900 Alfer Hölleâ is sourced from a steep, terraced parcel of ungrafted Riesling vines planted around 1900 in the Alfer Hölle vineyard, located near the village of Alf on the lower Mosel. The soils here are classic Devonian slate, and the extremely old vinesâmany still on original rootstockâyield small, concentrated berries that express the raw essence of site and vine age.
The 2024 vintage was marked by freshness and moderate ripeness, favoring a linear, acid-driven style. Fermentation is spontaneous, often long and slow, and the wine is aged in old Mosel Fuder (large oak barrels) with extended lees contact. No fining, filtration, or unnecessary intervention. This bottling is typically Trocken (dry), with a firm backbone and deep mineral resonance. A natural match for oysters, smoked trout, or aged Alpine cheeses.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Weingut Stein, led by the visionary Ulli Stein, is one of the Moselâs most distinctive and uncompromising producers. Based in St. Aldegund, Stein champions forgotten, vertiginous vineyards and often works with some of the oldest and most extreme plots in the regionâmany of which are on original rootstock. His approach is resolutely traditional: organic farming, spontaneous fermentation, and low-intervention cellar work.
The â1900â series reflects his deep respect for vine age and history. The Alfer Hölle bottling is a standoutâfiercely mineral, deeply expressive, and a testament to the living legacy of pre-phylloxera Riesling. It is a wine for purists, and one that speaks powerfully of place, vine, and time.
