2020 Domaine de Champalou Vouvray "Le Clos du Portail", Loire Valley, France
ABOUT THIS WINE
Le Clos du Portail is the pinnacle dry white from Domaine de Champalou, sourced from a single walled vineyard (clos) in Vouvrayâone of the estateâs most privileged sites. Planted to old-vine Chenin Blanc on clay-limestone soils over deep tuffeau, the vineyard is farmed organically and with great care to preserve the site's natural balance and expression. This cuvĂ©e is only made in exceptional vintages and in very limited quantities.
2020 was a warm, dry year in the Loire, yielding rich yet balanced fruit with excellent phenolic ripeness and preserved acidity. Grapes were hand-harvested in multiple passes to ensure optimal ripeness and purity. Fermentation took place in 500L oak barrels using native yeasts, followed by aging on the lees for 11â12 months, with no bĂątonnage. The use of older oak enhances texture without masking the wineâs vibrant character.
The 2020 Clos du Portail shows classic dry Chenin characterâorchard fruit, fennel, and chamomileâwith underlying tones of flint, citrus oil, and gentle oxidative nuance. Broad on entry but tightly wound, the wine unfolds slowly, revealing both tactile depth and crystalline energy. Built to age 15â20 years, it will evolve toward notes of honey, lanolin, and almond with time.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Domaine de Champalou, founded in 1983 by Didier and Catherine Champalou, is one of Vouvrayâs most respected family-run estates. Now joined by their daughter CĂ©line, the domaine brings together traditional farming values with precise, modern winemaking, producing Chenin Blanc that is elegant, textured, and faithful to terroir.
The estate farms 21 hectares of Chenin Blanc organically, with certification and an emphasis on biodiversity, soil health, and low yields. Across all cuvées, harvest is done by hand, often in successive passes (tries), and winemaking relies on native yeasts and minimal intervention to allow each vineyard to speak clearly.
While Champalou is best known for its beautifully balanced Vouvrays across various sweetness levels, Le Clos du Portail is its most serious, cellar-worthy dry wineâa site-specific bottling that highlights the chalky minerality and quiet depth Chenin Blanc can achieve in its home terroir.
This is not just one of the finest dry Vouvraysâit is a benchmark wine for the potential of Chenin Blanc in limestone soils.
